The Virginia Board of Education has adopted an updated school performance and support framework aimed at helping schools across the state identify areas of strength and those needing additional support. This new system, which introduces a unified school performance framework, is aligned with federal requirements and provides performance information for each school through a set of performance labels.
Under the updated framework, schools will be assigned one of four performance labels based on their accumulated index points within the new system. The four performance labels are: Distinguished, On Track, Off Track, and Needs Intensive Support. These labels are set to be implemented beginning with the 2025-26 school year, providing an accessible way for communities, families, and educators to understand how schools are performing and where further support may be beneficial.
To support Virginia schools in interpreting and navigating the new system, the Virginia Department of Education has created a dedicated webpage for the new performance measures. This resource will offer detailed information on the framework’s functionality, as well as tools that families can use to understand the assigned ratings and resources to support families and schools.
The new performance framework provides an opportunity for PWCS to continue building on the progress and strategically target resources where they are needed most. The projections, based on data from the 2023-24 academic year, help educational leaders anticipate potential areas of focus well before the system officially takes effect. PWCS remains committed to fostering a learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
