Freedom students grow poinsettias, collect donations for peers

In October, Carlos Wallace and his class embarked on a heartwarming project in Freedom High School’s greenhouse. They began growing poinsettias, carefully planting, watering, and nurturing the seeds. Within weeks, the greenhouse was filled with vibrant shades of green and red as the poinsettias began to bloom.Wallace, a special education teacher at Freedom High, is passionate about engaging his students in unique and meaningful activities. This project not only taught his students about the life cycle of a plant but also imparted valuable lessons in money management and social skills through the collection of donations.

“We’ve been putting a lot of effort into it, making sure they grow, that they have water, and get enough sunlight,” said Nathaniel Criste-Justiniano, a 10th-grade student at Freedom.

The week before winter break, Wallace and his students gave away the poinsettias to students and staff during lunch periods in exchange for small donations. Each plant was wrapped in festive red coverings with a bow. The proceeds from this initiative will go into a general fund to assist classmates in need ahead of the holidays.

“Poinsettias symbolize good cheer, success, and community spirit, reflecting the positive energy and virtues of Freedom High School’s students and staff,” said Wallace. "I truly appreciate the collaboration and support from my Freedom colleagues to make this project a success!"
