“I feel so incredibly honored to have my work be chosen to be part of such an awesome exhibition,” said Daryl Price, a senior at Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School.
His artwork, part of the College Board 2024 Advanced Placement (AP) Art Portfolio online exhibit, was part of more than 80,000 student submitted portfolios, and one of 50 chosen for the prestigious honor of exhibition internationally.
“Daryl's personal passions, music and art were evident in his research, experiments, and overall outcomes,” said Elizabeth Byrnes, art teacher at Colgan High. “His process was successful because he stayed organized with his thoughts, applications, and creations.”
Byrnes also pointed to Price’s approach to the project as a key factor to his successful selection.
“He allowed himself to play and experiment. If he hit a speed bump or success in the process, he documented it and would pivot all while using these experiences to grow. [His art project] was chosen because he showed this direct evidence in his AP Studio Art 2D portfolio,” she said.
Price carefully planned his art piece, a compilation of scenes paying homage to punk music, ensuring it accurately reflected the nuances of the culture. His success, in part, is a credit to his experience in Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS), who he said has supported his development as a young artist.
“In my years in PWCS, I think all of my art teachers have been really supportive of just creation and my imagination in general,” Price said, adding that “Colgan itself...really helped me find and establish my creative voice.”
“It’s a proud moment, not only for Daryl and myself, but also for our Center for the Fine and Performing Arts visual arts program, Colgan High School, and community,” said Byrnes. “This recognition showcases the incredible potential of young artists and serves as a reminder of how hard work and passion can lead to remarkable accomplishments.”
