Students posing with awards

Congratulations to Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School for winning three Cappies, the area's prestigious high school theater awards. Colgan High’s theater program competed against other high school theater programs across northern Virginia, D.C., and Maryland, earning top honors during the Cappies award ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

“Earning these awards is a nice validation of the caliber of work that our students put into every show,” said Lanny Warkentien, theater teacher and director at Colgan. “These are some of the hardest working and most talented students I have ever encountered and for others to see and acknowledge that is very rewarding.  It's great to know that others see in our students what we have always known to be true.”

From the website, the Cappies is a writing and awards program that develops writing, critical thinking, and leadership skills in high school theatre and journalism students. Student critics attend productions at other schools and write critical reviews with the aim of getting published by local media. The winners for the Cappies are all voted for by eligible student critics to decide who among their peer performers and technicians should be recognized.
