Prince William County Public Schools earns highest honor in financial reporting

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2024. This is the 23rd consecutive year PWCS has received this prestigious award.

The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. The attainment of this award represents a significant accomplishment for the staff and a valuable service to county residents.

“Receiving the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for FY 2024 reflects PWCS’ unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and excellence in financial stewardship,” said La Toya Thomas, director of finance. “This recognition is not only a testament to the diligence of the Finance Department, but also to the strategic leadership of the School Board and executive leadership team. Their dedication to sound financial governance empowers every school and department to uphold the highest standards in managing public resources.”

The annual comprehensive financial report is reviewed against high standards set forth by the GFOA for its Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting program. The goal of the program is not to assess the financial health of participating governments, but rather to ensure that users of their financial statements have the information they need to do so themselves.
