The National Attendance and Engagement Meta Network has invited Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) to join its prestigious cohort of school divisions recognized for leadership in reducing chronic absenteeism. As September marks Attendance Awareness Month, PWCS proudly celebrates this milestone as a reflection of its commitment to student success and daily engagement.

“We are honored to receive this invitation, and this opportunity aligns with our strategic vision, ensuring every student feels supported and inspired to attend and thrive every day,” said Dr. Kala Goodwine, director of student health and wellness. “The invitation to join the Meta Network is a powerful affirmation of the strides PWCS has made and confirms that our strategies are working and progress is being made. It also signals that the school division is ready to help shape the national conversation on student engagement and absenteeism.”

PWCS is making meaningful progress in reducing chronic absenteeism. From 2021-2025, the division lowered its chronic absenteeism rate by an impressive 6.7%. Most notably, during the 2023–24 school year alone, PWCS achieved a 5.7% decrease—an achievement that has drawn national recognition and affirms the effectiveness of its student engagement strategies.

Participating in this cohort offers PWCS a unique opportunity to accelerate its impact in confronting chronic absenteeism, collaborating with other forward-thinking school districts nationwide, and enhancing its capacity to support students.

Central to PWCS’ strategy for reducing chronic absenteeism is the school division’s commitment to fostering a positive school climate and culture. By working cohesively, using data, and offering support for students’ physical, emotional, and academic needs, the school division fosters an environment that encourages regular attendance and has seen positive results.

As a participant in the Meta Network, PWCS will continue to explore and refine this strategy and create others to continue to strengthen student support and engagement.

Chronic absenteeism—defined as missing 10% or more of the school year—affects nearly 15 million students nationwide, including both excused and unexcused absences. That’s just two days a month, but it can significantly impact a student’s ability to read at grade level, stay on track academically, and graduate on time.

The Meta Network brings together educators, administrators, researchers, and other professionals to work as a team to help solve chronic absenteeism. Members share proven strategies and exchange data to learn from each other and strengthen attendance efforts. To learn more, visit the National Coalition for Improvement in Education website.
