Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) hosted a ceremonial event to celebrate the construction of the future “Potomac Shores” Elementary School, scheduled to open in fall 2027. The event brought together local elected officials, School Board members, Superintendent of Schools Dr. LaTanya D. McDade, PWCS executive leadership, and construction representatives to mark this exciting milestone.

“There is no doubt that equitable access to a new, state-of-the-art school positively impacts a school’s climate and culture,” said Dr. McDade. “This new elementary school symbolizes our community’s commitment to education and the bright futures of our youngest learners. It is a place where curiosity will be ignited, talents discovered, and dreams nurtured.”

Currently referred to as “Potomac Shores” Elementary School, the official name will be determined by the School Board following recommendations from the School Naming Committee.

The event opened with a musical performance by select advanced orchestra members from Potomac Shores Middle School, conducted by Amy Ruhlman. The ensemble performed “Sonata Vivant” by Elliot Del Borgo, setting an uplifting tone for the celebration.

Remarks were shared by:

  • LaTanya D. McDade, PWCS Superintendent
  • Tracy Blake, Vice Chairman of the School Board
  • Justin Wilk, Potomac District School Board Representative
  • Deshundra Jefferson, Chair of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors
  • Andrea Bailey, Potomac District Supervisor and Vice Chair
  • Kimberly Werle, Associate Superintendent for Eastern Elementary Schools

The new school will help accommodate growing enrollment in the Potomac Shores area and alleviate capacity pressures at nearby elementary schools. It is designed to serve approximately 1,000 students in grades K–5, supporting PWCS’ strategic goal of expanding equitable access to modern learning environments.

The three-story brick building will include:

  • Numerous classrooms
  • Gymnasium
  • STEAM and art classrooms
  • Media center
  • Learning stairs
  • Photovoltaic panels on the roof to offset electrical power usage—an innovative step in sustainability

The school is designed by Architecture, Inc. and constructed by HESS Construction Company. Anthony Greathouse from the PWCS Facilities Department serves as the project manager.
