Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) has announced the appointment of Alfonso Smith as the new director of student activities management, effective November 3, 2025. In this role, Smith will oversee all student activities and athletics across the division, championing student growth, leadership, and resilience. Smith brings more than two decades of experience in education, having served as a school principal, director of student services, counselor, and coach.

He joins PWCS from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), where he has served as the principal at John R. Lewis High School from 2020. Before that, he was the associate principal at Hayfield Secondary School.

During his time with FCPS, Smith has received numerous awards including being named the Outstanding New Principal of the Year in 2021. Under his leadership, John R. Lewis High School improved the graduation rate and multilingual learner outcomes, and decreased the dropout rate.

Smith’s background in student activities and athletics is extensive. As the associate principal at Hayfield Secondary School, he supervised athletic and extracurricular programs, monitored and ensured compliance with Virginia High School League (VHSL) rules and regulations. He has also held basketball coaching positions at Mount Vernon High School and in PWCS.

Smith holds a master’s degree in counselor education from North Carolina A&T State University and a bachelor’s degree in home economics and community services with a minor in business from University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
