September is Suicide Prevention Month, and PWCS is proud to join the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in promoting this year’s theme: “Start the Conversation, Be the Difference.”
Talking about self-harm and suicide can be challenging, but it’s a vital step in supporting student well-being.
Knowing and recognizing the signs of self-harm and suicide are crucial for early intervention and support since many students with mental health issues don’t speak up. Some students may choose not to disclose these issues due to fear of judgment or feel that support isn’t available, making it even more important for families to recognize the signs and reach out. We encourage families to know the signs (go to the Learning the Signs & Conversation Starters section), such as withdrawal, changes in behavior, hopelessness, or talk of self-harm.
If you recognize the signs for your student or any loved one, start the conversation and seek help early.
PWCS offers a robust network of support for students with mental health challenges:
These resources are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year:
Together, we can break the stigma around mental health and ensure every student feels seen, heard, and supported.
