During Attendance Officer Appreciation Week, Gar-Field High School is celebrating one of its own, Claudia Cruz, whose dedication and compassion have made her an essential part of student success.
Attendance officers across Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) help students reach their full potential by promoting regular attendance. This supports the division’s goal of maintaining a 95% average daily attendance rate and improving on-time graduation.
No two days are the same for Cruz. Her mornings begin with attendance reports from her assigned schools, followed by home visits, interagency meetings, student follow-ups, and family engagement during intakes or court proceedings. Each task reflects her mission to keep students connected and supported.
“Establishing meaningful relationships with students is a vital aspect of my role,” Cruz said. “I try to build understanding and empathy, especially within the unique demographic of my schools. It creates a safe space for students and families to share challenges they face both in school and in the community.”
Cruz motivates students through empathy and accountability, sometimes with small incentives and always with encouragement. “I’m not expecting perfection,” she said. “My goal is to see consistent improvement.”
Cruz believes strong attendance habits are key to long-term success. “Attendance impacts not only academic performance but also the development of social skills,” she said. “By emphasizing consistent attendance early, we’re shaping success both in and beyond school.”
She joined PWCS in 2015 and transitioned into her current role in 2020, just before the pandemic. Helping students navigate the shift back to in-person learning remains one of her biggest challenges.
Cruz’s impact extends beyond attendance. She recalls helping a student named Belinda, who sought her guidance even without attendance issues. Cruz helped her enroll in summer school, allowing her to graduate a year early. “I don’t know where I’d be without Ms. Cruz,” Belinda said. “She truly helped me; she’s so much more than an attendance officer. I don’t think I would’ve graduated if it wasn’t for her.”
Moments like these define Cruz’s passion. “The most rewarding part of my role is knowing I’m making a meaningful difference,” she said. “Watching a student go from chronic absenteeism to regular attendance or supporting families in accessing mental-health resources, is incredibly fulfilling.”
Matthew Mathison, principal at Gar-Field High, commended Cruz for her persistence. “Being an attendance officer is one of those jobs that’s never finished,” he said. “Claudia stays focused and never gives up. She’s consistent in everything she does.”
As PWCS honors Attendance Officer Appreciation Week, Cruz said the recognition means a great deal. “While I genuinely love what I do, knowing that the extra effort I put in to support students is seen and valued is incredibly rewarding,” she said.
