Celebrating 25 years of impact: Dr. Jennifer O’Looney named Virginia School Psychologist of the Year

The Virginia Academy of School Psychologists (VASP) has named Dr. Jennifer O'Looney, a school psychologist serving Tyler and Yorkshire Elementary Schools, Virginia School Psychologist of the Year. This prestigious award celebrates professionals whose work is exemplary and comprehensive in the following areas:

  • Data-based decision-making and accountability
  • Consultation and collaboration
  • Development of cognitive and academic skills
  • Development of socialization and life skills
  • Student diversity in development and learning
  • Knowledge of school and systems organization, policy development, and climates
  • Prevention, crisis intervention, and mental health

With 25 years of service to Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS), Dr. O’Looney has built a legacy rooted in compassion, expertise, and advocacy. Colleagues describe Dr. O’Looney as a tireless advocate for students. She is a cornerstone of her schools’ mental health teams, often leading initiatives that raise awareness of socio-emotional challenges and promote inclusive support systems. Her deep knowledge of literacy and dyslexia has positioned her as a statewide expert, and her role as an adjunct professor at George Mason University and as an intern supervisor in PWCS has helped launch numerous careers.

“She never hesitates to respond when support is needed,” shared Dr. Wendy Martin-Johnson, director of programs and development for the special education department. “She is widely respected as someone who will go the extra mile to support and advocate for students and schools while also being an unwavering champion for school psychologists.”
