Collage of high school graduation ceremonies

Dear PWCS Families, Employees, and Community,

November is such an exciting time as students complete college applications and make postsecondary plans. As National Scholarship Awareness Month reminds us, financing those plans may be a different matter.

PWCS provides the support needed to help our students create thriving futures and learn how to finance their dreams of going to college with the help of dedicated college and career counselors in every high school. In PWCS, their role is to prepare students for college and career readiness toward whichever path they may choose. Encourage your senior to set up a meeting with their college and career counselor this month and visit our PWCS Financial Aid resources webpage for more information.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used by nearly all universities, colleges, and career schools for granting federal, state, and college-funded student financial aid. Filling out the FAFSA form is a critical step toward finding financial support for our students’ continuing education, including Pell Grants, Work Study, federal student loans, other grants and programs, as well as scholarships. Additionally, students who may not be eligible for federal student aid may qualify for state financial aid and should complete the Virginia Alternative State Aid Application as soon as possible.

PWCS is beginning the community engagement and planning process to prepare for two new elementary schools: one in the Woodbridge area and another in the Potomac Shores area. The goal is to balance enrollment, relieve overcrowding, and ensure equitable access to modern learning environments. Starting today, families can review proposed boundary scenarios on the PWCS Redistricting Portal and share feedback during upcoming community town halls. I invite you to learn more about this process and the opportunities to engage in our division’s decision-making.

As a reminder, visit the Specialty Program Application Process webpage for step-by-step instructions on how to apply, key deadlines, and what happens after you submit your application. If you need support during the application process, please join one of our virtual help sessions or reach out to the Advanced Academics and Specialty Programs office at [email protected].
