Ahead of Veterans Day, Minnieville Elementary School continued its heartfelt tradition of honoring those who have served in the armed forces.  

Students created a wide array of crafts to send to veterans at the Richmond VA Medical Center, a gesture that has grown into a cherished, schoolwide initiative.  

What began as a simple outreach opportunity to help students understand the importance of military service and gratitude has evolved into a dynamic educational experience.  

For five years, students have participated in craft-making sessions, patriotic read-alouds, and received visits from local veterans. These activities not only foster creativity but also deepen students’ appreciation for the sacrifices made by service members. 

“We like to call it our Veterans Day extravaganza,” shared Tina Huddleston, librarian at Minnieville Elementary. “It's more than just a day, it's a time of year dedicated to bringing understanding of the sacrifices veterans make.” 

This year’s collection of crafts includes beaded bracelets and keychains, handmade cards and drawings, and decorative buttons. Students also created tissue paper flags and poppies, along with a banner featuring messages of thanks and encouragement.  

“My favorite craft was drawing and making cards for the veterans,” said Mia, a student at Minnieville.  

The effort is coordinated with support from local veterans and volunteers through the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1503, who help coordinate the delivery of the crafts and share their impact with the school community. 

“I really enjoyed spending time with the students and seeing their creativity come to life,” Star Martinez, Sr. Vice Commander of VFW Post 1503, said. “It was very rewarding.” 

This initiative was especially meaningful to volunteer Juanita Abdo, who worked as a Department of Defense civilian for 34 years.  

“These students are our future and there’s no stopping them,” Abdo said. 

Through these acts of kindness and learning, Minnieville Elementary School continues to foster a spirit of respect, empathy, and civic pride in its young learners—ensuring that the legacy of service and gratitude lives on in the next generation.
