Graphic for ESP Day

Long before the first bell rings at Lake Ridge Elementary School, the building is already awake. The hum of vacuums echoes through the halls, the inviting scent of breakfast drifts from the cafeteria, and lights flicker on—signals that the heartbeat of the school has begun.

November 19 is Education Support Professionals Day, a time to honor the dedicated individuals who keep PWCS schools running smoothly. Their early mornings, friendly greetings, and unwavering support create safe, welcoming spaces for learning.

This day reminds us of the essential roles these professionals play—from preparing classrooms before dawn to encouraging students throughout the day. At Lake Ridge Elementary, their care and commitment keep the school’s pulse strong.

By sunrise, the custodial team ensures every classroom shines, cafeteria staff prepare breakfast for eager learners, and the front office prepares families arriving at the door.

“We start before sunrise,” said Carlos Lopez, the school custodian, with a smile. “The best part is knowing the building is ready for the kids and teachers.”

When buses roll in and car doors open, Lake Ridge support staff greet students first—with warmth and familiarity. Bus drivers, office staff, and instructional assistants know hundreds of names by heart

“It’s not just hello and goodbye,” said Erin Tappendeck, front office assistant, “It’s developing those real relationships with parents and kids. That connection sets the tone for learning.”

Throughout the day, education support professionals keep the rhythm steady. Instructional assistants move from classroom to classroom, helping small groups master reading strategies and math concepts. In the cafeteria, the lively team serves lunch with care and efficiency—offering not just meals but moments of kindness.

“We’re serving every student,” Stephanie Pollack, food services manager, shared. “We’re serving fun and excitement.”

As dismissal nears, the same spirit carries the day to a close. Staff members guide students safely to buses, answer parents’ questions, and prepare the building for another day of learning. The pulse slows, but it never fades.

Across Prince William County Public Schools, education support professionals are more than support—they are part of the foundation of every school. Their work begins before the bell and continues long after it rings, ensuring that every student’s day starts and ends with the same thing: someone who believes in them.

Whether it's a heartfelt thank-you at drop-off, a kind note sent from home, or a creative gesture your family comes up with, we invite you to take a moment to celebrate our incredible education support professionals. Their dedication helps make every school day smoother, brighter, and more successful for our children.
