Students at Unity Reed High School are making a powerful difference in their community this holiday season by creating the Angel Tree program at the school, inspired by the Salvation Army’s yearly initiative.
Through student-led efforts, some families in need at Ellis and Innovation Elementary Schools will receive gifts this holiday season, reflecting the deep commitment and passion that Unity Reed High students and staff have for their community.
“I enjoy being involved with this because I care a lot about the community,” Alyson, an 11th-grade student, said. “This initiative allows us to show leadership skills, and it helps others have a gift for the holidays.”
Students and staff “adopted an angel,” and additional funds raised during the school’s homecoming week covered the cost of wrapping each gift.
This initiative was further strengthened by Unity Reed's active participation in the Chick-Fil-A Leader Academy. Students enrolled in the first two years of leadership development classes, who also serve on the Student Activities Leadership Council, led the efforts of the Angel Tree.
As part of their commitment to growth, these students undertake an impact project designed to enhance their leadership abilities while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
“What I enjoy most about this initiative is being able to wrap gifts for the kids who aren’t able to get gifts, and I like bringing them joy,” Emari, a 10th-grade student, said.
Coordinators of the initiative, Lydia Armour, business education teacher, and Moira Snyder, English teacher, believe that the opportunity to provide for the community is a driving force of these efforts.
“I like this initiative because it gives these students a purpose and a sense of pride,” Snyder said. “They’re high school students; they are at the age where they want to make a change and make an impact.”
“One thing (principal Milagros Polanco) says is to show the “unity” in Unity Reed—and this is a great way to do that,” Armour added.
This initiative is not only providing holiday gifts for families in need but also giving Unity Reed students the chance to put leadership into action. Their efforts embody the spirit of Prince William County Public Schools, where students are encouraged to grow as leaders and contribute positively to their communities.
