Students working on iPads

To improve fairness, consistency, and transparency in how student learning is evaluated across the division, Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) made updates to the grading assessment policy, which was approved by the School Board in June 2025.

Semester and yearlong grades are now calculated by averaging quality points rather than course percentages. Marking period and final grades continue to use a percentage-to-letter conversion, such as a 95% equaling an A (4.0 quality points). Weighted course points are added when the course is completed, consistent with prior practice. Additional details and examples are available in the High School Course Catalog, and a sample calculation can be found in the course directory.

As part of this update, changes were made to automatic rounding in teacher gradebooks, which are now reflected in StudentVUE and ParentVUE. Some students may notice temporary changes to quarter or yearlong grades as teachers review and restore grades where rounding was previously applied. We appreciate your patience as staff complete these adjustments.

Families with questions after January 23 should contact their child’s teacher for grade-specific concerns or their child’s school counselor for transcript or scheduling questions.

PWCS appreciates the patience and cooperation of students, families, and staff as the division continues to strengthen grading practices in support of student success.
