Student hurdling

Gar-Field High School senior Joshua-Kai Smith won the national championship in the 60-meter hurdles at Nike Indoor Nationals in New York City.

Smith clocked a time of 7.59 seconds in the final, the third-fastest time in the country among high school student-athletes.

Smith, who is committed to the University of Florida for track, captured the national title after winning the Virginia High School League Class 6 boys indoor track and field championship in the 55-meter hurdles.

As he looks ahead to the outdoor track and field season, Smith remains focused. Reflecting on the national title, he said, “It feels good – there's more to come.”
