Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) offers a range of advanced academic opportunities at the middle school level. These programs challenge students, promote critical thinking, and lay a strong foundation for success in high school and beyond.
While advanced academic offerings vary by school, the following pathways highlight key opportunities available to middle school students in PWCS.
PWCS middle schools offer multiple math pathways for students who are ready for accelerated pacing and increased rigor. Based on fifth-grade SOL test data and the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test, students may be placed in either an accelerated or promoted pathway.
These pathways allow students to move one or more years ahead in mathematics and establish a strong foundation for continued advanced study in high school.
“Advanced math courses give students the opportunity to engage in higher-level thinking in prep for high school- and college-level courses,” said Kyra Schumacher, algebra teacher at Unity Braxton Middle School.
Extended Language Arts courses are available in grades sixth through eight and provide enriched instruction for students who demonstrate advanced skills in reading, writing, and analysis. These courses often include complex texts, deeper discussions, and opportunities to explore ideas through critical and creative thinking.
Schools offering extended language arts programs deliver meaningful extensions within the current grade-level standards, helping students build confidence and academic resilience as they prepare for further studies.
Advanced science learning is available to middle school students through enriched science and International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) science, offered in grades six through at select schools.
These courses emphasize inquiry-based learning, hands-on experiences, and accelerated pacing. Students complete enhanced science units, participate in science fairs, and engage in additional projects that go beyond the standard curriculum.
“The math and science program provides students with an opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills through hands-on activities that allow them to be innovative and collaborate with their peers,” said Sharon Bicey, an eighth-grade physical science teacher and science department chairperson at Rippon Middle School.
"I really enjoy the math and science program. It pushes you to do more and do it better,” shared an eighth-grade student.
All PWCS middle schools offer world language courses in grade eight, giving students an opportunity to begin earning high school credit.
IB MYP and World Language Specialty Program middle schools offer world language instruction in grades six through eight, allowing students to start earlier and progress further during middle school.
The study of world languages enables students to acquire the communicative skills and perspectives necessary to be an active member of our multicultural society and to gain a sense of belonging to the global community.
