Text of Board of County Supervisors Plans $31 million budget cut to PWCS over PWCS logoLast night, during its budget markup, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors (BOCS) conducted a straw poll indicating a potential reduction of more than $31 million to the Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) budget.

While the budget markup meeting was publicly scheduled, PWCS was not made aware that a reduction of this scale would be considered. If the BOCS formally approves this reduction at its meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, PWCS will be required to make significant, unplanned budget adjustments.

We are sharing this information to remain transparent and ensure staff and families are aware of the potential impacts to staffing and programming for the upcoming school year. Based on the scale of the proposed cut, the division anticipates impacts that may include:

  • A reduction in the planned employee pay increase.
  • Scaling back after-school programs.
  • Reductions to services, such as specialty program transportation.
  • Reductions to key PWCS Elevate 2030 Strategic Plan initiatives, such as universal pre‑K, student nutrition supports, and school‑based health services.

PWCS is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to keep families, staff, and the community informed as the county finalizes its budget on Tuesday, April 21.

Community members may contact their representative to share their concerns.

Thank you for your continued support of our students and schools.
