Student getting food in the lunch line at school

Dear PWCS Families, Employees, and Community,

PWCS is pleased to once again support students and families with free summer meals through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Summer Food Service Program. While school is out, children and teens, ages 18 and under, may receive breakfast and lunch at multiple school sites across the division. Meals are funded by the USDA and must be eaten on-site.

New this year, Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School will also offer a to-go meals option, allowing families to pick up weekly meal kits through the USDA program with no cost to families. Families interested in this option are encouraged to complete the short planning form by May 29. The form is optional and used for planning purposes only; families who do not complete it may still pick up meals while supplies last. Additional details are available on the PWCS Summer Meals webpage.

As a reminder, registration for Discovery Enrichment programs and K-8 summer school closes on Friday, May 22. High school registration ends on June 5. For more information, please visit the Summer Programs page.

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, “More Good Days, Together,” reminds us that student well-being requires all of us. PWCS offers mental health resources to support students and families as we work together to help every child feel safe, connected, and ready to learn. Please visit the PWCS Mental Health Awareness webpage to learn more about how we can help students thrive.

We also recognize National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, formerly known as Better Hearing and Speech Month. This observance raises awareness of communication disorders and honors the professionals who assess and treat them, like our amazing speech-language pathologist at Fitzgerald Elementary School. I am grateful to our speech-language pathologists for helping students strengthen their fluency, articulation, voice, and language comprehension.

PWCS is excited to recognize our dedicated retirees during the 2026 retirement ceremony at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. The ceremony will be broadcast on the PWCS Facebook page and the PWCS YouTube channel. The ceremony is broadcast to allow maximum participation of retirees from the past year and their families, including those who may have moved away. I encourage you to tune in and join our celebration.

Have an enjoyable weekend.

Sincerely,
