group of students holding trophyCheers and rapid-fire thinking filled the Unity Braxton Middle School auditorium as middle school students from across Prince William County Public Schools went head-to-head in this year’s Battle of the Brains competition, a fast-paced academic showdown.

Congratulations to Hampton Middle School for claiming first place. This win secures the school’s third consecutive Battle of the Brains championship—a testament to sustained preparation, strong coaching, and student dedication.

“All of us played a major role together, even the people who didn’t get up on stage,” reflected Hampton Middle eighth-grader Odysseus Harrington. “We spent many days and afternoons studying with each other just to get this, and it’s a hard-earned win.”

The annual event challenged students and reflected real classroom instruction, pushing participants to recall facts, apply strategies, and think critically under pressure as they answered questions spanning history, math, science, and language arts.

Working in teams, students raced against the clock to write down answers, relying on collaboration, communication, and trust in one another’s strengths. Each round mirrored the intensity of a televised quiz show, complete with suspense, celebration, and the occasional groan when time ran out.

The competition followed months of preparation, including study sessions, practice questions, and teamwork-building exercises. "It takes a group effort with all the teachers and grade level leads working together to find our best and brightest,” shared Lamar Howard, a civics teacher. “We went to practice and these kids just did what they needed to do.”

As students head into testing season, Battle of the Brains once again proved that academic rigor and school spirit can go hand in hand, turning studying into an experience that is as energizing as it is rewarding.
