The Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals (VAESP) has named Dr. Andrew Buchheit, principal of T. Clay Wood Elementary School, as Virginia’s 2026 National Distinguished Principal. This award recognizes principals who excel in instruction, student achievement, character development, and the creation of positive learning environments.
During a schoolwide SOL kickoff assembly, two student representatives surprised the audience by announcing that Dr. Buchheit had received the VAESP National Distinguished Principal honor. Moments later, the stage curtain opened to reveal VAESP representatives, PWCS Deputy Superintendent Dr. Carol Flenard, and T. Clay Wood Elementary staff members with flowers, balloons, and a celebratory cake. Throughout the crowd, staff members added to the excitement by raising signs featuring Dr. Buchheit’s face as he took in the surprise.
Dr. Buchheit expressed deep gratitude upon receiving the recognition, crediting his staff for their dedication and support.
“It’s just a great honor. I really think it represents the wonderful staff we have,” said Dr. Buchheit. “Many of us have been together since we opened the building 15 years ago, so I really feel like it’s their recognition in a way. I’m only as good as they are.”
“I am incredibly proud of Dr. Buchheit and this well-deserved recognition as Virginia’s National Distinguished Principal. His unwavering commitment to students and his ability to build a positive, inclusive school culture have made a lasting impact,” said Melissa Yuditsky, T. Clay Wood assistant principal. “Our students, staff, and families are fortunate to be part of a school community that is clearly focused on student success and growth under his leadership.”
Dr. Buchheit is a veteran school leader with 25 years of experience as a principal, including 15 years leading T. Clay Wood since its opening in 2011. Under his leadership, T. Clay Wood was recognized as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education—one of only eight schools in Virginia to earn this distinction that year.
As he continues to lead T. Clay Wood, Dr. Buchheit remains steadfast in his commitment to cultivating a positive, caring, joyful, and inclusive school culture. His selection as Virginia’s National Distinguished Principal highlights his exceptional leadership and serves as an inspiration to educators across the Commonwealth.
