From big ideas to hands-on solutions, PWCS students are turning creativity into action while caring for the planet. The division recently hosted its second annual Student Environmental Action Showcase (SEAS) at Woodbridge High School.
This community event featured projects from individuals, classes, and clubs from students in grades pre-K through 12. The showcase highlighted the innovation, creativity, and enthusiasm of PWCS students across the division as they addressed important issues like habitat preservation, sustainable energy, and waste reduction.
“I'm really happy that we’re all able to gather here for a common cause in helping the community to become more ecologically friendly,” said Abigail Pham, a junior who attends Osbourn Park High School and The Governor’s School @ Innovation Park. Events like SEAS are “really inspiring to both younger and older generations that care about the environment.”
Students presented their projects through engaging art and community-based activities to a panel of judges.
Grace Zimmerman, a fifth grader at Marshall Elementary School, presented a project titled “If We Lose Our Farms, Where Else Can We Grow Things?” and shared the importance of using resources sustainably. She emphasized the importance of using resources sustainably, sharing, “It's important to make sure we don't use everything and that we continue to manage what we have responsibly.”
The event showcased PWCS students’ problem-solving skills and influence in driving change in their local community through environmental stewardship.
On the importance of highlighting student innovation, Jessica Weimer, supervisor of energy and sustainability for PWCS, reflected, "This event marked the culmination of Earth Week in PWCS, and seeing the student projects firsthand was truly inspiring. These students are bringing the PWCS vision to life by imagining bold, practical ways to build a thriving future for their communities... and that’s exactly why our work matters."
SEAS also offered community members the opportunity to increase environmental literacy and take part in hands-on activities presented by local partners.
