Participate Learning names two PWCS educators 2026 Teachers of the Year

Participate Learning has recognized Merissa Daley, a third-grade teacher at Occoquan Elementary School, and Virginia Ormero Gonzalez, a Spanish teacher at Marsteller Middle School, as recipients of the 2026 Participate Learning Teachers of the Year Award.

For both educators, teaching extends far beyond academics. Through cultural exchange, authentic global connections, and a commitment to broadening students’ perspectives, Daley and Ormero create classrooms where curiosity, understanding, and belonging thrive.

“The Participate Learning teachers have truly become my family in the United States, offering support, friendship, and a sense of belonging throughout my journey,” Ormero said. “I value the opportunity to represent not only my home country but the shared values of the Hispanic community, while learning from colleagues from many different cultures and backgrounds. Being surrounded by so many nationalities and perspectives has broadened my global outlook and made the experience both enriching and deeply memorable.”

Originally from Spain, Ormero brings her culture to life in meaningful ways for her students. From sharing traditions and customs to facilitating an ongoing cultural exchange between her PWCS students and students in Madrid, she creates opportunities for learners to develop a broader understanding of the world and the people who inhabit it.

Daley shares a similar passion for expanding students' horizons. She embraces every opportunity to connect learning to experiences beyond the classroom, helping students see themselves as part of a larger global community.

“My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that ‘if a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn,’” Daley said. “Participate Learning aligns perfectly with that belief by encouraging educators to create meaningful, engaging, and culturally responsive learning experiences that meet students where they are.”

At Occoquan Elementary, Daley enriches learning by weaving the traditions, music, dance, language, and celebrations of her home country Jamaica into classroom experiences. Through these authentic cultural connections, students gain a deeper appreciation for diversity while developing the skills and perspectives needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
