Dear PWCS Families, Employees, and Community,
PWCS joins communities across the nation in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, recognized from September 15 through October 15. Throughout the month, our schools will acknowledge the histories, cultures, achievements, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. In PWCS, where our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, these celebrations provide opportunities for students to see themselves reflected in their learning while expanding their understanding of the experiences and perspectives of others.
I am proud to celebrate six PWCS schools that have been named 2026 America’s Healthiest Schools by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Congratulations to Antietam, Buckland Mills, Minnieville, and Victory Elementary Schools, as well as Saunders and Unity Braxton Middle Schools. These national recognitions reflect the intentional work happening across our schools to support the physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being of students, staff, and families.
PWCS is also earning recognition for the ways our students are learning to care for the world around them. The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources recently recognized 35 PWCS schools as Virginia Naturally Schools for integrating hands-on environmental learning and sustainability into the student experience.
Looking ahead, next week is School Security Officer Appreciation Week. I want to thank our dedicated PWCS school security officers who help ensure our students and staff can learn and work in safe, welcoming environments every day. Beyond ensuring safety, they strengthen school communities by building trust, supporting teams, and fostering a positive culture.
Finally, please remember that schools and offices will be closed Monday, September 21, in observance of Yom Kippur. To our families, employees, and community members who observe Yom Kippur, I wish you a meaningful day of reflection and observance.
Sincerely,
LaTanya D. McDade, Ed.D.
