Senior Bokre Samson is bringing lessons in leadership and public service back to Osbourn Park High School after representing Virginia at Boys State and Boys Nation this summer.
Samson, who attends both Osbourn Park High and The Governor's School @ Innovation Park, was one of only two students selected to represent Virginia at Boys Nation, a national youth leadership program.
The experience built on Samson's leadership roles at school. At Osbourn Park, he serves as the Command Senior Chief Petty Officer of the school's Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps unit and is active in Student Council, the National Honor Society, and varsity basketball and track.
Boys State and Boys Nation are immersive leadership programs where students run mock governments and step into the roles of elected officials and lawmakers.
"Each role has taught me something different about leadership, teamwork, and responsibility," Samson said. "Whether I was leading cadets, competing as an athlete, or working alongside my peers, I was able to apply those lessons throughout the week, which helped me succeed."
At Boys Nation, student leaders from across the country stepped into the role of U.S. senators to debate legislation, develop policy proposals, and compete for leadership positions.
During the program, Samson authored and presented the American Space Leadership Act of 2026, a proposal designed to increase funding for NASA while expanding opportunities for STEM education. The bill, Samson said, "passed the Senate with flying colors and was signed into law by the president."
For Samson, the proposal reflected his own aspirations.
"I aspire to attend a service academy and fly fighter jets, with the ultimate goal of becoming an astronaut," he said.
While leadership positions and legislative accomplishments defined much of the experience, some of Samson's favorite memories came from the connections he made with fellow delegates from across the nation.
"Meeting so many driven people my age reminded me why I pursue these goals and that I'm far from alone in wanting to make this world a better place," Samson said. "I am forever grateful to Osbourn Park High School and the Governor's School @ Innovation Park for helping guide my journey as a student and young adult."
