The work comes as enrollment patterns continue to shift across Prince William County, with some schools experiencing increasing enrollment while others are seeing declines.

The review will also help PWCS plan for the continued expansion of universal pre-K, a key initiative in the division's Elevate 2030 Strategic Plan. PWCS is working toward universal pre-K by the 2030-31 school year, with expansion occurring over time as the division builds capacity based on available space, staffing, and funding.

PWCS is leading the boundary review with support from an independent consultant firm with experience conducting similar analyses for school divisions across the country, including in our region. The consultant will support data analysis and other aspects of the review but will not make decisions about school boundaries.

No decisions about boundary changes have been made. The first phase of the review focuses on collecting and validating data and understanding current conditions across the division. That analysis will inform potential options and scenarios for consideration as the process moves forward.

As the review progresses, PWCS will consider factors including:

  • student enrollment and projected enrollment
  • school capacity and how facilities are being used
  • access to programs and services
  • transportation
  • school facilities
  • existing school boundaries

PWCS will share information with families and the community throughout the review. Beginning in spring 2027, families and community members will have additional opportunities to review information and provide feedback as potential scenarios are developed and shared. Community engagement will include meetings, surveys, and other opportunities for the public to review data and provide input before any decisions are made.

There is no action for families to take at this time. PWCS will continue to share information as the review progresses and will provide advance notice about opportunities for the community to participate.
