The National Alternative Education Association (NAEA) selected Independence Nontraditional School student Theresa Cosme for the inaugural National Alternative Education Day on Capitol Hill.
Cosme was one of only 14 student representatives selected nationwide to meet with congressional representatives and legislative staff. During the event, Cosme represented PWCS and shared her educational journey, helping amplify student voices and advocate for equitable resources and support for alternative education programs across the country.
Stephanie Bretzke, principal of Independence Nontraditional School, said, “Theresa’s selection is a wonderful reflection of our mission at Independence Nontraditional School. It demonstrates what is possible when students are provided with meaningful relationships, individualized support, and opportunities to succeed. Their accomplishments remind us why we remain committed to ‘Every Student. Every Day. Every Possibility.’”
Looking back on her experience, Cosme shared, “Representing Virginia at the Alternative Education Conference in Washington, D.C., was an unforgettable experience. As the only native-born Honduran student representative at the conference, I was nervous at first because it was my first time representing my school and speaking with important leaders and educators. Once I got started, it felt natural.
“The day before the conference, we explored the city, took pictures, and recorded videos for a project we're working on, which made the experience even more exciting. I'm thankful for the opportunity to share my voice, meet new people, and represent my school and Virginia in a positive way,” she said.
Instructional technology coach Latoya Prescod-Williams accompanied Cosme and helped highlight the work taking place at Independence Nontraditional School and the positive impact alternative education can have on student success.
“Watching Theresa participate in NAEA's Day on the Hill was a powerful reminder of what happens when students are given opportunities to use their voices beyond the classroom. I am so proud of Theresa and Independence Nontraditional School, and grateful to work in alternative education, where we can help students turn their goals into real-world experiences. Opportunities like this show our students that their voices matter and that they can be part of creating change,” reflected Prescod-Williams.
The recognition builds on a strong tradition of excellence in alternative education at Independence Nontraditional School. In 2022, the NAEA designated the school as an Exemplary Practices Model School for its commitment to supporting student success.
The NAEA advocates for students in alternative and nontraditional education programs and provides professional development, resources, networking opportunities, and an annual conference for educators.
