U.S. News & World Report released its 2027 rankings of the top schools across the nation, naming Porter Traditional School the No. 1 middle school in Northern Virginia and the No. 2 middle school in the state.
U.S. News & World Report ranks public elementary and middle schools in every state using a consistent methodology that evaluates student performance on state mathematics and reading/language arts assessments.
Kaitlyn Engelmeier-Foor, who has served as Porter Traditional’s principal for nine years, said the recognition reflects the dedication of the school's students, staff, and families.
“Our staff believes deeply in excellence for all students and works collaboratively every day to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed,” she said. “We are equally grateful for our families, whose partnership and collaboration strengthen our school, and for our students, who continually challenge themselves to grow and achieve their personal best. This recognition belongs to our entire community and reflects what is possible when dedicated educators, engaged families, and motivated students work together toward a shared vision of excellence.”
Porter's recognition extends beyond its middle school program. U.S. News & World Report also ranked Porter the No. 1 elementary school in Prince William County Public Schools.
Porter was not the only PWCS school to earn top recognition. Pennington Traditional School ranked as the No. 2 middle school in Northern Virginia and the No. 3 middle school in Virginia.
Porter opened in 2004 and is named in honor of trailblazing educator Mary G. Porter. Serving students in grades 1-8, the school has built a tradition of academic excellence and high expectations for its students.
