Jobs for Virginia Graduates (JVG) has named Leigh Broady, a health and physical education teacher at Unity Reed High School, the Region 4 Outstanding Specialist of the Year.

Broady was recognized for building two strong JVG programs in Region 4, contributing to state-level trainings, and maintaining connections with more than 98% of her graduates as they take their next steps after high school.

“I am truly humbled,” Broady said. “This is my dream job. I’m so grateful I get to show up every day and support students as they figure out who they are and who they want to become.”

In Broady’s classroom, students learn practical skills, such as interviewing, budgeting, and career planning—but just as importantly, they find encouragement and a sense of belonging.

“We become like family,” Broady shared. “We celebrate wins, work through challenges together and have honest conversations about life. Those moments are often what students remember most.”

For many students, that impact lasts well beyond graduation.

“JVG has been one of the most influential courses I’ve taken,” said Eman, Class of 2024. “It helped me grow as a learner and as a future professional, especially through skills like communication, teamwork, and networking.”

Eman said Broady’s support made a lasting difference.

“Mrs. Broady believed in me and all her students. She created a safe, supportive, and engaging environment. I would encourage all students to take JVG—it really prepares you for the real world.”

Broady makes a point to remain available to students after they graduate, offering guidance and encouragement during what can be an overwhelming transition.

“I want my students to know my support doesn’t stop at graduation,” Broady said. “Once they’re mine, they’re always mine.”

Milagros Polanco, principal of Unity Reed High, said Broady’s care and consistency stand out.

“She goes above and beyond to prepare students for college, careers, and life. Her work has had a lasting impact on our students and our school community.”

Broady will be recognized nationally at the JAG Edge Conference in Los Angeles this summer.

For Broady, the motivation is simple.

“My students inspire me every day. Watching them grow, gain confidence, and accomplish things they once doubted makes it all worth it.”
