Artificial intelligence (AI) is the field of computer science that deals with the creation of intelligent machines that can perform tasks that typically require human capacities, such as understanding natural language, recognizing objects, making decisions, and solving problems.
Generative AI is a tool that generates new content or outputs, often creating something new from learned patterns. By harnessing the power of AI for learning in combination with good instructional practices, "we can create a more inclusive and equitable education system that enables every student to thrive" (Fitzpatrick, 2023).
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a common part of everyday life, both in and out of school. Because students will encounter AI in many settings, Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) believes it is important for families, students, and educators to understand what AI is and how it can be used safely, responsibly, and ethically.
How AI is Supported in Instruction
PWCS supports the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence by:
Modeling safe and responsible AI use in classrooms.
Providing teachers with guidance and resources to help students understand the appropriate use of generative AI tools.
Curating high-quality instructional resources that support learning.
Allowing high school students to access approved, secure AI tools, such as Microsoft Copilot or Canva’s Magic Studio, when appropriate for learning.
Reviewing digital tools that use AI to ensure they protect student data and meet instructional quality standards.
Through these efforts, PWCS helps students learn how to use AI as a supportive learning tool while emphasizing digital citizenship, critical thinking, and responsible decision-making.
