Hands-on learning, social-emotional support, and professional development at 10 elementary schools
Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) has rolled out "Operation Strong Hearts and Minds," a new initiative dedicated to supporting military-connected students. Ten elementary schools with significant military-affiliated populations will benefit from enhanced resources, funded activities, and staff training—all made possible through a Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant.
The initiative aims to foster both academic and social-emotional growth through hands-on science programs and a variety of supportive activities. Participating elementary schools include Ashland, Covington-Harper, Henderson, Kyle Wilson, Leesylvania, Marshall, Old Bridge, Springwoods, Westridge, and Williams.
Key resources feature Engineering is Elementary (EiE) Kits and LEGO Science Kits for grades 3-5, integrating real-world STEM activities with social-emotional learning (SEL) guides developed by school counselors. Sample units cover life, physical, and earth/space sciences, encouraging critical thinking and collaboration.
Beyond the classroom, Operation Strong Hearts and Minds provides book clubs, dedicated Book Nooks, military balls, community mural projects, and STEM Nights to engage families and foster resilience among students. Professional development opportunities for educators include membership in the Carly and Adam’s STEM Teachers Club, as well as participation in state and national science and counseling conferences to address the unique needs of military-connected children.
Thanks to the 2023 DoDEA Military-Connected Students’ Grant, all 10 participating schools are equipped and empowered to help students thrive academically and emotionally as they navigate the challenges of military family life.
