Medicaid

The Commonwealth of Virginia authorized participation in the federal Medicaid program in 1991. The program is jointly administered by the Virginia Department of Education and the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS).

Overview

Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) is licensed by DMAS to receive federal funds from two sources. We participate in the School Medicaid Program, which allows PWCS to receive reimbursement for medical services that we provide, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy. Additionally, PWCS participates in an administrative time study three times a year. This program provides federal reimbursement for administrative activities associated with health-related activities such as conferences, meetings, and planning.

• Appropriate health care will benefit children's readiness and ability to learn.
• The federal Medicaid program reimburses schools for many health services provided in schools, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychological services, skilled nursing services, speech therapy, and others.
• Participation in the school Medicaid program requires parental permission.
• Participation in the school program will in no way impede a family's lifetime Medicaid benefits.
• Parents of uninsured students can contact their student's school counselor to receive assistance and complete the paperwork necessary to receive Medicaid services.
