Substitute Teaching Opportunities

Effective April 15, 2026, PWCS will not accept applications for substitute teachers or substitute teacher assistants for the 2025-26 school year.

Please check back in July for opportunities for the 2026-27 school year.

Prince William County Public Schools offers two substitute roles that support students in the classroom and schools when regular staff are away:

  • Substitute Teachers lead classroom instruction by following lesson plans and managing student learning.
  • Substitute Teacher Assistant (TA) support teachers and students by assisting with classroom activities and supervision.

Hourly Pay Rate for 2025-26

  • $22.25
    per hour for Substitute Teachers
  • $20.40
    per hour for Substitute Teacher Assistants

  1. Review Qualification Requirements

    Qualification requirements differ by role; please review the criteria carefully to ensure eligibility prior to submitting your application.

    Substitute Teacher Requirements - Applicants must meet one of the following:

    • 48 or more semester college credit hours from an accredited institution (official or unofficial transcripts accepted), or
    • ParaPro Test score of 455 or higher, or
    • Current or expired Virginia teaching license (PWCS retirees may upload an expired license)

    Substitute Teacher Assistant Requirements - Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.

  2. Complete the Substitute/Temporary Application

    • Application must be dated within the last six months.
    • A professional reference from a current or most recent supervisor must be submitted.
      • Reference must align with work experience listed in the application.
      • If a valid email address is provided, an electronic reference request will be sent automatically.

  3. Upload Required Documents

    To upload documents:

    1. Log in to the PWCS online application system.
    2. Go to Manage Documents.
    3. Upload the files to attach to your application

  4. Things to Know

    • After the application is submitted, the Substitute and Temporary Employment office will review the candidate's application, references, and submitted documents.
    • A background check will be conducted.
    • Partial applications will not be reviewed.
