The Computer-Based Instruction (CBI) program offers a flexible, nontraditional educational pathway designed to support a wide range of learners whose needs may not be fully met in a traditional school setting. The program serves students who are temporarily placed out of school pending disciplinary proceedings through the Student Hearings Department and/or the School Board, including both general education students and students with disabilities. The program provides an important opportunity for many learners to continue their education without interruption. For students with disabilities, eligibility and placement are determined by the IEP Team, and if the outcome of the disciplinary process results in a long-term suspension or expulsion, educational services continue through the CBI program.
Beyond serving students involved in disciplinary processes, the CBI program also supports a diverse population of learners who benefit from personalized scheduling, targeted support, and an alternative approach to instruction. This includes students who need flexible or extended hours due to work or family responsibilities; students who are pregnant or parenting; English learners who may thrive in a self-paced environment; and older students returning to complete coursework toward a diploma. Through its adaptable structure and individualized learning model, the CBI program offers students a positive and productive path for staying engaged in their education and progressing toward graduation. Please consult your student's administrator for information on enrollment.
All students utilize an online platform and have access to highly qualified online teachers as well as a team of Prince William County Public Schools teachers and staff for support.
Program Goals
Ensure students stay engaged in learning in core academic areas and selected electives
Support students in maintaining or improving their academic skills
Once their enrollment in CBI concludes, we will provide a smooth transition back to their base school.
Family Involvement
We view families as essential partners in each student’s success. Parents/guardians will:
Participate in a family/student entry meeting
Collaborate with staff to understand program expectations and how to best support their student
Be provided with their student’s support plan while they are enrolled in CBI
Participate in IEP meetings and help guide goal setting for students with special needs
Instruction
Instruction is delivered through EdOptions
Students receive targeted support from a team of PWCS teachers and staff
Expectations for Student Success
CBI follows the PWCS Code of Behavior that supports a safe, positive, and productive learning environment
During the family/student entry meeting, CBI staff, in collaboration, will develop appropriate goals for each student while they are enrolled
If expectations are not met, staff will work with the student and family to determine appropriate next steps and ensure the best environment for learning
Support Services
Students receive both academic and behavioral support to help them stay on track and prepare for a successful return to their base school. Our goal is to help students develop the skills, confidence, and mindset needed to move forward in a positive direction
