How Students Learning English Get Help

Students receive help learning English based on their English proficiency level.

Elementary School (Grades K-1)

English Levels 1 and 2 (Beginning)

  • 200 minutes (3.33 hours) weekly, (same as 40 minutes daily) of special English instruction in a class just for students who are learning English.
  • Connected to the core subject of Language Arts.
  • Students are in a classroom with other students who are learning English and who are at the same or near the same English and grade level.

English Level 3 (Intermediate)

  • 150 minutes (2.5 hours) weekly, (same as 30 minutes daily) of special English instruction in a class just for students who are learning English.
  • Connected to the core subject of Language Arts.
  • Students are in a classroom with other students who are learning English and who are at the same or near the same English and grade level.

English Level 4 (Advanced)

  • 150 minutes (2.5 hours) weekly, (same as 30 minutes daily) of special English instruction in a class just for students who are learning English or a class for English learners and non-English learners.
  • Connected to the core subject of Language Arts, but services may be provided in math, social studies, or science.
  • Students are in a classroom with other students who are learning English and who are at the same or near the same English and grade level.

Elementary School (Grades 2-5)

English Levels 1 and 2 (Beginning)

  • 225 minutes (3.75 hours) weekly, (same as 45 minutes daily) of special English instruction in a class just for students who are learning English.
  • Connected to the core subject of Language Arts.
  • Students are in a classroom with other students who are learning English and who are at the same or near the same English and grade level.

English Level 3 (Intermediate)

  • 225 minutes (3.75 hours) weekly, (same as 45 minutes daily) of special English instruction in a class just for students who are learning English.
  • Connected to the core subject of Language Arts.
  • Students are in a classroom with other students who are learning English and who are at the same or near the same English and grade level.

English Level 4 (Advanced)

  • 225 minutes (3.75 hours) weekly, (same as 45 minutes daily) of special English instruction in a class just for students who are learning English or a class for English learners and non-English learners.
  • Connected to the core subject of Language Arts, but services may be provided in math, social studies, or science.
  • Students are in a classroom with other students who are learning English and who are at the same or near the same English and grade level.

Middle School (Grades 6-8)

English Levels 1 and 2 (Beginning)

  • Students receive 400 minutes (6.6 hours) of special English classes each week in a class just for students who are learning English. The 6.6 hours are equal to 80 minutes daily.
  • Connected to the core subject of Language Arts, English, or Reading.
  • Students are in a classroom with other students who are learning English and who are at the same or near the same English and grade level.

English Level 3 (Intermediate)

  • 200 minutes (3.3 hours) weekly (same as 40 minutes daily) of special English instruction in a class just for students who are learning English.
  • Connected to the core subject of Language Arts, English, or Reading.
  • Students are in a classroom with other students who are learning English and who are at the same or near the same English and grade level.

English Level 4 (Advanced)

  • 200 minutes (3.3 hours) weekly (same as 40 minutes daily) of special English instruction in a class just for students who are learning English or a class for English learners and non-English learners.
  • Connected to the core subject of Language Arts, English, or Reading but services may be provided in math, social studies, or science.
  • Students are seated with other students learning English at or near their same English and grade level or with non-English learners.

High School (Grades 9-12)

English Levels 1 and 2 (Beginning)

  • Students receive 420 minutes (7 hours) of special English classes weekly in a class just for students who are learning English. The 7 hours are divided into two 84-minute classes, five times over a period of 10 days or one 84-minute class daily.
  • In one of the classes, students will learn English through cross-curricular content, and a second class will focus on English, Math, Science, or Social Studies.
  • Students are in a classroom with other students who are learning English and who are at the same or near the same English and grade level.

English Level 3 (Intermediate)

  • 210 minutes (3.5 hours) weekly (same as one 84-minute class that meets 5 times over 10 days, or a daily 42-minute class) of special English instruction in a class just for students who are learning English.
  • Connected to one class of cross-curricular content or core subject of Language Arts, English, or Reading.
  • Students are in a classroom with other students who are learning English and who are at the same or near the same English and grade level.

English Level 4 (Advanced)

  • 210 minutes (3.5 hours) weekly (equivalent to 1 block of 84 minutes that meets five times over a 10-day cycle, or a daily 42-minute block) of special English instruction in a class just for students who are learning English or a class for English learners and non-English learners.
  • Connected to one class of cross-curricular content or Language Arts, English, or Reading.
  • Students are seated with other students learning English at or near their same English and grade level, or with non-English learners.
