School Safety Inspection Checklist for Virginia Public Schools

All public schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia are required by law to conduct an annual school safety audit in order to assess school safety conditions. As a means for collecting individual school safety audit information, the Virginia Center for School Safety (VCSS) annually administers the Virginia School Safety Survey. This online survey provides all public schools (K-12) with a standardized report format for conducting and submitting their audit information to the VCSS. The VCSS, located within the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, was created through Virginia Code § 9.1-184 and is mandated to provide training for Virginia public school personnel, serve as a resource and referral center for Virginia school divisions, and collect and disseminate information on school safety initiatives and school safety data, among other things.
