Computer-Based Instruction

Computer-Based Instruction Program

Who Do We Serve?

General Education and Students with Disabilities

Some general education students who have been placed out of school pending outcome of disciplinary proceedings through the Student Management and Alternative Programs Department and/or the School Board, are eligible to receive nontraditional educational services through the Computer-Based Instruction (CBI) program. Students with egregious offenses may not be offered the opportunity to participate in this program.

Students with disabilities who have been placed out of school pending outcome of disciplinary proceedings through the Student Management and Alternative Programs Department and/or the School Board, are also eligible to receive nontraditional educational services through the CBI program as identified by the IEP Team. If the outcome results in long-term suspension or expulsion, educational services shall continue through the CBI program.

Program Components

Placement Tiers

There are three Tier Levels of placement for our CBI students:

  • Tier I: For those students serving 11-45 days of long-term suspension.
  • Tier II: For those students serving 46-364 days of long-term suspension.
  • Tier III: For those students allowed remote access only.

Goals

  • Allow students to continue to receive educational services in the core content areas and some select electives. IEP Teams will identify the goals for those students receiving special education services.
  • Allows students to maintain and/or improve academic performance.
  • Enables students to effectively transition into the traditional classroom setting once the disciplinary period has concluded.

Family Involvement

  • Parents/guardians will work cooperatively with staff to fully understand program expectations and their role in ensuring student success.
  • Parents/guardians shall be involved in the IEP Team placement meeting and understand the goals established for students with special needs.

Instruction

  • Instruction is provided through Canvas via Zoom.
  • Highly qualified staff, certified in the specific content areas, provide direct instruction.

Behavioral Expectations/Discipline

  • Each student shall receive, understand, and sign a strict "Code of Behavior" contract agreeing to follow the conditions as set forth in Prince William County Public Schools "Code of Behavior," in the Student Management and Alternative Programs Department/School Board decision letter, and by the evening school administration.
  • If the above conditions are not fulfilled, the student may be subject to further disciplinary action and a change in placement.

Support Services
