English Language Classes

Want to learn or improve your English?

The Prince William County Public Schools Adult Education Program offers English Language classes for adults in Prince William County, Manassas City, and Manassas Park City.

English Language Acquisition Classes

English language acquisition classes are for individuals 18 years of age and older who have a native language other than English. Classes offer various levels and specializations designed to meet the needs of the learner.

Classes are designed for students to acquire life skills that will help them function in their communities and workplaces. Topics such as personal information, school, friends and family, health, time, work, shopping, community, daily living, and leisure are used for students to improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing of the English language.

English Language Acquisition Classes

To ensure students are in a class that will meet their personal needs, a placement test is given to determine the proper class level. Students will be placed in classes depending on an assessment, location of class, and student enrollment: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Multilevel.

Beginning Literacy is for students who cannot speak or understand English or have minimal reading or writing skills or function minimally or not at all in English.

Low Beginning is for students who can understand basic greetings and simple phrases, read numbers and letters, and function with difficulty in social situations.

High Beginning is for students who can understand common words and simple phrases, read most sight words and common words, and function in some situations related to immediate needs.

Low Intermediate is for students who can express basic survival needs in spoken English, read and write using simple material, and function with routine community and work tasks.

High Intermediate is for students who can participate in conversation in familiar social situations, read text on familiar subjects, write simple paragraph text, and function independently to meet basic survival needs.

Advanced is for students who can understand and communicate in a variety of contexts, read moderately complex text, write multi-paragraph text, and function independently to meet most survival needs.

English for Communication and Academic Skills is for students at advanced or post-advanced ESL levels to use the lessons to build on their language skills for higher English language proficiency or towards enrolling in high school completion (Bridging or GED) or in our workforce development classes (Customer Service and Sales, Microsoft Office Specialist, or Entrepreneurship and Small Business).
