English Language Acquisition

English Language Acquisition (ELA) classes are for individuals 18 years of age and older who have a native language other than English. Classes offer various levels and specializations designed to meet the needs of the learner.
All classes follow the PWCS holiday calendar. If you have questions about the class schedule or need additional information about classes, call 703-791-7357 or email AdultEd@pwcs.edu. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Class Descriptions
Beginning Literacy is for students who cannot speak or understand English or have minimal reading or writing skills or function minimally or not at all in English.
Low Beginning is for students who can understand basic greetings and simple phrases, read numbers and letters, and function with difficulty in social situations.
High Beginning is for students who can understand common words and simple phrases, read most sight words and common words, and function in some situations related to immediate needs.
Low Intermediate is for students who can express basic survival needs in spoken English, read and write using simple material, and function with routine community and work tasks.
High Intermediate is for students who can participate in conversation in familiar social situations, read text on familiar subjects, write simple paragraph text, and function independently to meet basic survival needs.
Advanced is for students who can understand and communicate in a variety of contexts, read moderately complex text, write multi-paragraph text, and function independently to meet most survival needs.
