The Introduction to World Languages course is a non-credit elective course for middle school students, preferably in sixth or seventh grade, as an exploration of the study of some languages prior to their selection of the formal study of a world language for high school credit.

Course Description

Through this non-credit, elective nine or eighteen week or year-long course, students will explore the study of several languages to include Latin, French, Spanish, one non-Roman alphabet language such as Japanese, and one other language such as German or Italian if time allows and as aligned with the courses offered in feeder high schools. Emphasis is on providing students the origins of how people communicate, through body language, tone, space, and oral and written language throughout the global community and how cultures are similar and inter-related and having that knowledge may enhance or create barriers to support communication. Students also learn about the connections of languages of the world, basic interpersonal communication skills of each one studied and cross-cultural perspectives of the speakers of each language and where they live.

Students will "travel" to different corners of the world and learn how to be positive global ambassadors of their schools and understand how language study enhances their English skills, reinforces interdisciplinary knowledge, sets the foundation for them to be lifelong learners of languages, and empathize with and appreciate others learning English as a second or third language. The overarching goal is to provide students opportunities to explore languages prior to selecting one language to formally study for high school credit and to become more international-minded.

The course may be offered in various middle schools and vary in length and offering each year based on student interest, scheduling possibilities, and school funding.

Curriculum

There is a prescribed curriculum, Pacing Guide, and adopted textbook and identified authentic resources for this course based on the frequency and duration of the scheduled time. The six required thematic units include: communication, cultures, Latin, French, Spanish, and Japanese. If time allows as in a semester or year-long course, German and/or Italian may be added. The study of French and Spanish may be switched depending on the major language of the teacher. The curriculum is designed to be flexible in order to accommodate for the school variables.

Its merits remain the same as an exploratory world language experience and is recommended as an age-appropriate course for younger middle school students who want to have a world language learning experience without the pressures of earning a high school credit.
