External Research and Approval Process

Pursuant to Regulation 612-1, external agencies, organizations, and individuals are permitted to conduct research in Prince William County with the approval of PWCS leadership.

Information

Please be aware that it is standard practice to protect the time of teachers and administrators during busy times of the year. Hence, the timing of proposed studies can be a significant factor.

Studies Which Require Approval

All external research studies and activities proposed by any agencies or any individual staff members, students, parents, or community members are subject to the PWCS Research review and approval form by the Research, Accountability, and Strategic Planning Department.

Studies Exempt From Approval

Internally generated program evaluation activities, undertaken by PWCS staff members as part of their assigned responsibilities for the purpose of improving division programs and services, shall not be subject to external research approval procedures.

Design, Purpose, Audience and Description

Design of the research activity, purpose of the study, data collection instruments, audience for the information, and a description of what shall be included in the summary report.

Instruction intrusion

Amount of intrusion upon instructional time.

Time, Permissions and Timeline

Amount of staff time required for participation or coordination of research activities, including time needed to obtain parental permission and allow inspection of third-party created survey forms. Timeline for research activities.

Compliances

Compliance with federal, state, and school division requirements for students' right to privacy.

Resources

Amount of Prince William County Public Schools supplies and equipment required.

Benefit

Potential benefit of the study to school and community.
