Program Requirements

  • Students must be 16/17 years old to be eligible for the program and must be enrolled in Prince William County Public Schools.
  • The student must be able to show proof of part-time employment (or approved volunteer work or internship).
  • The student must be able to provide a valid, government-issued photo identification.

Very Important - State Requirement

The state requires that students in the Sixteen/Seventeen-Year-Old GED Program read on a 9.0 grade level in order to be eligible for participation in the program. Students must score a 125 on each of four sub-tests of GED Ready (the official practice test).

Counseling

Students will receive career counseling which will include vocational assessments, resume writing, interviewing skills, and other workplace readiness skills. Please note that the students will need to take and pass the Economics and Finance class through the Prince William County Virtual High School if they have not already done so at their base school. This will be arranged once in the program. Students will need to pass this course before being eligible to take the GED test. Students need to score a 150-160 (Likely to Pass) on the Official State Practice Test, GED Ready. Schools are notified when students do not meet the criteria.

Mandatory Requirements to Complete the GED Program

  • Students are required to attend two; three hour educational sessions per week in order to maintain their enrollment in this program. This mandatory attendance is necessary since many students who enter the program need adequate preparation to meet the mandatory requirements.
  • In addition to preparation for the GED test, students will receive counseling for employment.
  • Employment Requirement - Mandatory for all students enrolled in the GED program to be currently employed for a minimum of 15 hours per week. Students must be able to show proof of employment (or approved volunteer work or internship). Students who cannot meet this requirement will be withdrawn from the program.
  • The program meets in the late afternoon and follows the regular PWCS schedule. Students who do not meet attendance requirements in the GED program will be out of compliance with the compulsory school attendance law. They will be referred to an attendance officer and the juvenile court system will be notified. GED students are under the same rules and guidelines as all other PWCS students.
  • Once students have achieved a level of proficiency in all of their curriculum areas, they will be allowed to take GED Ready to determine if they are eligible to take the State's Official GED exam.
