General Guidance
Selecting Sites and Apps
When selecting digital learning resources, teachers should check the Supported Software and Web Applications list.
Teachers should use caution if considering learning resources that are not on the Supported Software and Web Applications list. Unapproved applications pose several areas of concern which include, but are not limited to:
- The mining of student data for marketing purposes
- Inaccurate and/or unaligned content
- Age requirements
- Non-compliance with federal or state student data privacy laws
If you are unsure about a learning resource, please check with your Instructional Technology Coach (ITC) before you use it with students.
Copyrighted Material
Teachers are reminded to be mindful of copyright law. Certain learning experiences, such as reading to your students, while suitable for a physical school environment, have additional considerations in virtual environments. Before you share or transmit copyrighted material, check with your school administrator.

Considerations for Selecting Digital Learning Resources
Digital learning resources should be purposeful and promote best practices. Digital learning provides opportunities for meaningful, authentic learning. Divisionwide applications and resources, such as SMART Learning Suite online and Discovery Education, promote collaboration, creativity, and cognitive engagement.
As you and your staff select digital learning resources, consider:
- How will the resource be used for student learning? What are the expected outcomes?
- Does the resource allow for open-ended projects that are standards-aligned, incorporating students' creativity and personal choices?
- Does the resource encourage and support self-selected reading?
Before using digital resources with students, please reference the Supported Software and Web Applications list.
Learning resources not on the Supported Software and Web Applications list should not be used, in accordance with Regulations 295-1 and 470-2. Special considerations must be given to student data privacy, which include, but are not limited to:
- The mining of student data for marketing purposes
- Inaccurate and/or unaligned content
- Age requirements
- Non-compliance with federal or state student data privacy laws
If you are unsure about a learning resource, please check with your Instructional Technology Coach before your staff uses it with students and before purchases are made.
